Each spreads as a circle, and where they overlap, rings of light and dark stand up.

It looks like a surface rising and falling, but this observation does not measure height.
It measures only where the water is gathering.
Bright is where water has crowded together.
Dark is where water has drawn away.
Real water glitters for the same reason. What you see is not light but density.

Both sources lie inside the circle you can see.
Placed outside, the wavefronts came out almost parallel and it stopped looking like water.
Too near or too far, and the rings do not stand.
