Press the picture and the points thin out. There are four rungs —
forty thousand, six hundred, forty, one. The equation running underneath does not change.
Only the shape goes.
“Listen” is the same bundle of relations, thrown to the ear instead of the eye.
No sound was added; the same equation is put out through another sense.
The body winds around a single core. From tail to head it makes just under two turns.
The phase of the winding advances with time.
Each point circles the axis of the body while being carried forward.
The winding is thick in some places and thin in others.
That difference travels from head to tail as well.
The core itself bends.
The bend in height and the bend in depth move at different speeds, so the same shape never returns.
The head, two horns, two whiskers, four legs, and the crest along the back are all placed
at distances measured from one point on the body.
When the body bends there, the place itself moves.
The roots do not come away because they are reading the same number.
The whiskers do not move at their roots; the further out, the later they swing.
The four legs stroke at different times.
As points are removed, the crest, the legs, and the whiskers break first.
What is left of the body is only the line of the winding, and then the path of a single point.
What made it a dragon was never inside any one point.
