forty thousand, six hundred, forty, one. The equation running underneath does not change.
Only the shape goes.
“Listen” is the same bundle of relations, thrown to the ear instead of the eye.
No sound was added; the same equation is put out through another sense.
The tail is larger than the body.
The tail is made of sixty-four rays. There is no membrane.
The rays do not open from a single point.
They grow alternately left and right along an axis that coils.
So the further out, the wider the gap to the next.
Long and short stand together in bundles.
Two waves make the bundles.
Their speeds differ slightly, so only where they overlap does a ray grow long.
The bundles are not still. They move slowly outward.
The tail swings later than the body.
The further out, the more it coils.
It is still coiling after the swing has ended.
