Press the picture and the points thin out. There are four rungs —
forty thousand, six hundred, forty, one. The equation running underneath does not change.
Only the shape goes.
“Listen” is the same bundle of relations, thrown to the ear instead of the eye.
No sound was added; the same equation is put out through another sense.
The mantle stays rigid.
What moves is only the fins along its sides.
A wave crosses the fins, front to back.
The ten arms do not swim.
They only follow, late, the motion the fins have made.
How late differs from arm to arm.
Match them and they become one bundle, and it is no longer a creature.
Because they lag unevenly, they look like they are hanging.
A rigid part, a part a wave crosses, and a part that only follows.
